#2018BOTY Day 1: Movie of the year

Initially I thought this was going to be easy but after changing my favourite movie of the year 3 times… I guess not.

Let me start by quickly going through the runners up

2nd Princess : SearchingSEARCHING

It’s a fast-paced mystery thriller that tells the story of a father who desperately tries to find his missing daughter and realises he didn’t know his daughter as well as he thought he did. What added to the awesomeness was this movie is told entirely through screens (TV, phone, computer, CCTV) and that added an element I enjoyed considering a lot of movies somehow sidestep how much we use tech. In 2018!

1st Princess : Black Panther

bpBefore you roll your eyes I’m not going to take you on a “our culture was represented” tip. Nah I’m a Marvel comics fan and when they announced Black Panther was coming I went and re-watched the Marvel Knights Black Panther animated series to get ready. The movie really was well put together. To be real very little separates Black Panther and the winner here but I had to pick one.

The winner is…..

Avengers Infinity War

I’ve been waiting for this movie since 2012’s The Avengers (Avengers Assemble depending where you are) when that giant raisin smiled at the prospect of challenging earth being equal to courting death. What the movie did best was it’s amalgamation of almost all characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (no Antman Guys) in a cohesive movie. 76 characters! Like seriously that flick was 97% action scenes! I felt that. If for some weird reason you haven’t seen this movie, do yourself a favour and watch it before the year is over.

  1. Avengers infinity war yes, but after i watched Black Panther, i wasn’t impressed. But one thing i have to commend though was the marketing and publicity behind that movie. But as a lover of sci-fi i wasnt entirely sold. But over and above its a great movie

    1. The sci fi elements of Black Panther were a bit sketchy. I agree. It’s definitely more a comic book adaptation than sci fi. Yes Marvel/Disney put a seriously welll executes campaign into those two movies and it worked where it mattered most.

      1. I had so much expectations maybe for so much black magic lol. But the disappointment i got is equivalent to the one i had after watching Transformers Age of Ultron. Coming from Dark of the Moon to that haaaa c’mon

      2. BLASPHEMY!!! There is no Marvel movie remotely as disappointing as Transformers Age of Extinction (such a misleading title cause we are still getting Transformers movies) except for Thor The Dark World.

    1. It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it! Lol. I think it comes down to criteria and what popped for you. The 6 year wait and the cramming of 76 characters into a movie that doesn’t feel bloated did it for me.

      1. I don’t know if you’re being serious or?

Anyway “I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my…”

Okay, maybe not Technician, but definitely in the know

      2. Look for Erykah Badu Live (1997). The story goes that Tyrone was actually the product of a sound check session and they felt so good about it they decided to play it in a show. So she drops those famous words just before.
